"Blessed" is the step before "saint" — and the icons of the blesseds are often the most moving of all, because they show people from our own streets: a teenage web designer, a family of nine executed in their farmhouse, a bishop imprisoned for his faith. In the icons of Blesseds the halo is a reminder that the Church has already recognized their heroic virtue. This guide explains what beatification means and introduces the most beloved blesseds.
Our blessed icons are printed on solid alder wood and gilded by hand in Poland; many are prepared to order.
What Does "Blessed" Mean?
Beatification is the step before canonization. A "blessed" (Latin beatus) has been declared by the Church to be in heaven and worthy of public veneration — but only in a particular region, country or religious order, not yet by the whole Church. This is why in icons the blessed usually carries a halo that is not always golden: in Western art a radiant or starry crown is used, while canonized saints have the full nimbus. After a second miracle and canonization, the blessed receives the title "saint" and universal veneration.
The Most Beloved Blesseds
- Blessed Carlo Acutis — the teenage programmer of Milan who documented Eucharistic miracles online; beatified in 2020, patron of the internet and young people.
- The Ulma Family — Józef and Wiktoria with their seven children, executed in Markowa in 1944 for sheltering Jews; beatified together in 2023, a symbol of family holiness.
- Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko — the "chaplain of Solidarity," murdered by the security services in 1984; his icon is a standard of Polish devotion.
- Blessed Stefan Wyszyński — the Primate of the Millennium, imprisoned for three years by the communist authorities; the "cardinal of the nation."
- Blessed Karolina Kózka — the young girl who died defending her purity in 1914; patroness of youth and of the diocese of Tarnów.
- Blessed Dina Bélanger — the Canadian pianist and religious, known for her mystical writings.
Reading a Blessed's Icon
Blessed icons follow the same grammar as saint icons — habit or everyday clothes, an attribute from the person's life, an inscription — but with the distinctive halo. Carlo Acutis is shown in jeans and a sweatshirt with a laptop or a monstrance; the Ulma family is shown in their Sunday clothes; Wyszyński wears the bishop's vestments with prison bars in the background. If you want to understand the language of attributes more deeply, see our guide to saint symbols.
Where Blessed Icons Belong
Because blesseds are venerated locally, their icons are especially at home in family shrines, in parishes connected with their stories, and in the countries where they lived. A blessed icon is also a beautiful gift for a teenager (Carlo Acutis, Karolina Kózka) or for a family (the Ulma family). In Poland, blessed icons hang in thousands of homes — these are the saints "next door."
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I pray to a blessed, or only to saints?
A: You can ask for a blessed's intercession; public veneration in the liturgy is limited to the places where the blessed is officially recognized — until canonization extends it to the whole Church.
Q: What is the difference between a blessed and a saint in an icon?
A: Practically only the halo (starry or radiant for blesseds) and the inscription ("Blessed" instead of "Saint"); the icon itself is otherwise the same.
Q: Who is the youngest blessed depicted in icons?
A: The shepherd children of Fatima — Francisco and Jacinta Marto — were beatified at ages 11 and 10; they appear in our modern saints collection.
Q: Will some of these blesseds become saints soon?
A: Yes — causes for Carlo Acutis, the Ulma family and Blessed Stefan Wyszyński are advancing; when a blessed is canonized, we update the icons' inscriptions to "Saint."
