No subject appears more often in Christian iconography than the Mother of God. The classical types were fixed centuries ago: the Eleusa (tenderness), in which the Child presses his cheek to his mother's; the Hodegetria ("she who shows the way"), in which Mary holds the Child and points to him; the Platytera, in which she is shown with arms raised and the Child in a medallion; and the Panagia, the all-holy one enthroned with the Child.
An icon of the Mother of God with the Child is the heart of a home prayer corner in both Catholic and Orthodox tradition. It is the icon traditionally placed in a child's room, given at a wedding, and kept at the door of the house. Mary is invoked as protector of the family, of mothers, and of those who travel.
We carry the great classical types — Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Virgin of Tenderness, the Platytera — together with the most venerated national and monastic icons: Our Lady of Kazan and Vladimir, the Virgin of Smolensk, Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, the Panagia Portaitissa of Mount Athos, Our Lady of Kykkos and the Mother of God of Aglona. See also our saint icons, the A-Z index and the buyer's guide.
Every icon is printed on a solid alder wood board and finished by hand with genuine gold leaf in Poland. Sizes range from small devotional formats to large pieces for churches.
For centuries Christians have travelled to the places where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared — and brought home an image of what was seen there. These images are among the most recognisable in the Catholic world, and they are tied to specific promises, prayers and pilgrimages.
Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico, 1531), patroness of the Americas, shown with the roses in her mantle; Our Lady of Lourdes (France, 1858), where St. Bernadette saw the "Immaculate Conception" in the grotto; Our Lady of Fatima (Portugal, 1917), with the rosary and the three shepherd children; Our Lady of La Salette (France, 1846); Our Lady of Knock (Ireland, 1879), the silent apparition of the Lamb on the altar; Our Lady of Medjugorje (Bosnia, since 1981); Our Lady of Akita (Japan, 1973); Our Lady of Kibeho (Rwanda, 1981); Our Lady of La Vang (Vietnam, 1798); Our Lady of Walsingham (England, 1061), the oldest Marian shrine in the English-speaking world; Our Lady of Licheń and Our Lady of Gietrzwałd (Poland); Our Lady of Aparecida (Brazil); Our Lady of Vailankanni (India) and Our Lady of Antipolo (Philippines).
These icons are usually chosen for a personal or family connection — a pilgrimage, a country, a devotion passed down at home. Each one is printed on alder wood and finished by hand with gold leaf in Poland, and available in several sizes.
The Black Madonnas are images of the Virgin Mary with a dark complexion. They are found across Europe — in Poland, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany — and most of them are very old, Byzantine in origin, and associated with miraculous reputations. The dark colour may come from centuries of candle smoke and darkened varnish, from the materials used by the first iconographers, or from the icon's own tradition; the Church has never defined an explanation.
The most famous Black Madonna is the icon of Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, Poland — the Queen of Poland, kept by the Paulite monks since 1382, venerated by Catholics and Orthodox alike and credited with saving the monastery during the Swedish siege of 1655. It is the icon most often requested by Polish families, and copies of it hang in churches and homes around the world.
Our collection also includes the Black Madonna in an amber dress, the oval Częstochowa icon, and Black Madonna images in the classical half-length Byzantine form. See also our Mother of God icons and the A-Z index.
Each icon is printed on a solid alder wood board and finished by hand with genuine gold leaf. Several sizes are available, from small devotional formats to large icons for a family prayer corner or a chapel.
The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows — Mater Dolorosa — follows Mary through the seven sorrows foretold by Simeon: the prophecy of the sword, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in Jerusalem, the meeting on the way to Calvary, the crucifixion, the taking down from the cross, and the burial. It is one of the oldest and most human devotions in the Church: an invitation to stand beside Mary at the foot of the cross.
The Mother of Sorrows is shown with a sword piercing her heart, sometimes with seven swords, or with her hands joined and her eyes downcast; the Servite tradition gives her a black mantle. In the Pietà she holds the body of her son.
The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is celebrated on 15 September, and the devotion is especially loved by the Servite order and by families who have lost a child. Our collection includes Our Lady of Sorrows, the Seven Sorrows of the Mother of God, Our Lady of Lichen, Our Lady of Compassion and the Pietà.
Each icon is printed on a solid alder wood board and finished by hand with genuine gold leaf in Poland. Several sizes are available; larger formats can be prepared to order for churches and chapels.
